Japanese Calligraphy

Standard

I’m continually looking for ways to deepen my bonds with Japanese language. I’m done with manga and anime, I think, even though I still enjoy them from time to time.

This time I’m taking up Japanese calligraphy. Before taking lessons, I borrowed a book from the library, “Brush Writing: Calligraphy Techniques for Beginners”, and also watched several videos on YouTube. Those are helpful, but only after 3 classes I understood how to use the brush properly. Maybe it will take me more than 100 practices per character to really get it right. It’s more complicated than I imagined to create a beautiful character.

The point is, to continue with Japanese, I need several different avenues to keep me motivated. Learning some aspects of Japanese culture helped me to appreciate the language more. It also helps that all my fellow calligraphy learners are Japanese and they conversed a lot in Japanese during lessons.
